We were asked to share how we each interpreted the phrase\u2014what we <em>made up<\/em> in our minds when we heard it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what people offered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYes! It\u2019s green peas.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDo you think that\u2019s a good thing or a bad thing?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019d taste it to figure out what the green thing is.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019d play a guessing game with others first!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019d probably not eat the soup.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This delighted me, because I often do a similar exercise in intercultural trainings I lead for global companies. I ask two volunteers to visualize a frog\u2014really see it in detail as if they were about to draw it, then have them describe their frogs to the group. Inevitably, they\u2019re nothing alike. Same species. We assume that if we speak the same language, we mean the same things. But we don\u2019t. Even the simplest words come filtered through our personal histories, emotions, cultures, assumptions, and private logic. Here\u2019s a real-life example from just a few nights ago between my partner Michael and I:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">[Mini Scene]<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">He was making a beautiful dinner and, after slaving away in a hot kitchen for hours, asked me if I\u2019d mind making the salad. I was in my office, catching up on a mountain of emails after being away at a conference. I told him, \u201cLet me just finish this\u2014I\u2019ll be there in a few minutes to make the salad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Five minutes later, he walks into my office: \u201cDinner\u2019s ready. Are you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Now <em>I\u2019m<\/em> miffed. I hadn\u2019t finished my emails yet, and I really wanted to close the computer before dinner so I could be fully present. I was also a little disappointed: I had agreed to contribute the salad, and he\u2019d made it anyway\u2014so I felt like I missed my one chance to participate. But from <em>his<\/em> perspective, dinner was hot and ready, and he was eager to eat. We\u2019re both seasoned communicators and longtime partners. We\u2019ve had lots of practice. So we talked it through, explained what had happened from our respective angles, and moved on with kindness and mutual respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many people\u2014many of my clients, for instance\u2014don\u2019t have those skills. That simple awareness\u2014my frog isn\u2019t your frog\u2014is the foundation. You can\u2019t assume your meaning was received the way you intended it. And someone else\u2019s reaction may come from an entirely different story than the one you\u2019re telling yourself.<br><br>But mindfulness alone isn\u2019t enough. We also need acceptance: that other people\u2019s interpretations are as valid as ours. That there is no universal \u201cTruth\u201d with a capital T\u2014only personal truths.<br><br>Let\u2019s bring this to life with another example:<br><br>Imagine it\u2019s Monday, and it rained.<br><br>Scientists could verify this with data\u2014water samples, radar, all of it. But at the end of the day, if you ask four people how the rain affected them, here\u2019s what you might hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIt was horrible. I hate when it rains on Monday. The commute was miserable.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThank goodness it FINALLY rained. My garden needed it. I hope it rains all week!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWait\u2026 it rained today?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t real rain\u2014barely enough to wash my car.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So who\u2019s right?<br>What\u2019s \u201ctrue\u201d?<br><br>They all are.<br><br>The truth isn\u2019t the event. It\u2019s the meaning we make of it. And if we forget that, we\u2019re bound to misunderstand each other\u2014again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step Two: Clarify, Don\u2019t Assume<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we pause and acknowledge the potential for misunderstanding, the next step is to clarify. Ask questions. Reflect back what you heard. Don\u2019t fill in the blanks with your assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In coaching, I do this constantly. A client shares something, and rather than rush to interpret it through <em>my<\/em> lens, I ask: \u201cWhen you say that, what exactly do you mean?\u201d or \u201cCan you tell me more about that part?\u201d It helps me understand <em>their<\/em> frog, not project mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One Practical Tool: IMAGO Dialogue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favorite tools for clear, respectful communication\u2014especially when emotions run high\u2014is the <strong>IMAGO Dialogue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, IMAGO Dialogue is a structured process that builds connection through understanding, not debate. It has three simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mirroring<\/strong> \u2013 Repeat back what you heard the other person say. No judgment, just the message as you received it: \u201cSo what I\u2019m hearing is\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Validation<\/strong> \u2013 Acknowledge that their perspective makes sense, even if you don\u2019t agree: \u201cThat makes sense to me because\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong> \u2013 Reflect the emotion you imagine they\u2019re feeling: \u201cI can imagine that felt frustrating\/lonely\/disappointing\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This tool is used in couples therapy, but it\u2019s just as useful in work teams, friendships, and families. I\u2019ve used it in coaching sessions, board retreats, and heated household negotiations. It\u2019s a peace practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miscommunication is an invisible wedge. It breeds conflict where there could be compassion, and division where there could be connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can do better. We can pause. We can listen.
